Who is Dr. Woodwind?
Gerasim Vaskovskiy is an oboe player with a master’s degree in Music Performance and a deep passion for woodwind instruments. Since 2019, Gerasim has been working closely with musical instruments, starting his journey as an oboe maker at Howarth of London Ltd in Worthing. In 2024, he took a bold step forward by opening his own repair shop, dedicated to caring for the woodwind family.
Gerasim’s love for solving problems began early in his life. During his music school days in Minusinsk, Russia, his flute teacher, Zinur Abubakirov, was the go-to repair person for everything—wind, brass, strings, even pianos. With limited tools and resources, his teacher crafted parts like flute pads from scratch. Watching him fix instruments after they had been damaged by students left a lasting impression on Gerasim. This experience likely planted the seed for his current career and gave him a deep understanding of how the moving parts of an instrument work—and how, with the right approach and care, almost anything can be repaired.
In 2007, Gerasim switched from flute to oboe and began studying at the Krasnoyarsk State Academy of Music and Theatre. It was here that he encountered the challenges of being an oboist in an area with no professional repair services within almost 1,000-kilometer radius. Out of necessity, he started learning how to regulate and tune his own instrument—a skill that became invaluable throughout his career.
Between 2010 and 2014, Gerasim performed professionally as an oboist with the Russian State Opera and Ballet Theatre in Krasnoyarsk. This opportunity allowed him to play in world-class ensembles and refine his artistry within a professional orchestral environment.
While studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, Gerasim’s teachers recognised his exceptional skill with his hands and encouraged him to further develop his expertise in instrument repair. Today, as Dr. Woodwind, Gerasim dedicates himself to helping musicians by restoring and maintaining their instruments with precision and care. He approaches each instrument with dedication, ensuring it performs at its absolute best.
